Mrs. Hoffer has presented Silentheart, the first book of a new Vampire trilogy, in a manner that if adults did not care for the pandemonium of the Twilight Saga, then this would be the next exciting paranormal romance to choose. I found that I was immediately caught up in this unwinding, twisting story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Despite a few grammatical flaws, this was an amazingly interesting story with some very creative ideas on vampires. It is hard to find a story that does not always carry the same themes on the walking dead. I am very much looking forward to the next two chapters in this unfolding saga as the reader is left hanging and wanting more!

Cristian West, a famous artist, doesn't understand why his mind is haunted by an image of a very beautiful woman. He sees her constantly in his thoughts and feels as though he knows her. One day, during an exhibit of his new masterpiece, he sees the woman that he thought only existed in his mind in the flesh. What Cristian doesn't know is that the past and the present are about to collide and his life will never be the same again.

“Darkness and Light” by Kathryn Nichole does feature a wonderful tale of lost love, hate and discrimination. This story does indeed show that love conquers all, is sometimes found in the most unlikely places and often right in front of us. Nichole does manage to capture the emotions of the heart as well as how others can be un-accepting of those we choose to love. While I enjoyed this story, I found that the dialog between the characters was rather sloppy and not very smooth to follow. This made it harder to understand and get a good grasp on what the character was thinking, feeling or even saying; which could cost her on this story. I say this as I was very close to putting the book down as I found myself re-reading lines as I was unable to track what was occurring at times. As this tale is open to a sequel, I am hoping that Kathryn Nichole will clean up the dialog by breaking it out as it is normally portrayed; as well as paragraph breaks when switching to other ‘scenes’ when featuring others in the story.

‘Chrysalis: Awakening’ has fast become a standing favorite in my paranormal preferences. I have read many that fall into the paranormal/ paranormal romance genre, yet M.L. Lacy has combined the best of this and fantasy unlike any other I have read. I found that I could not put this book down as it was engaging from the start with suspense, mystery, romance and so much more! It is not too often that I feel ‘swept up’ in a story; but in this one, I felt as if I was right there with Bree and her experiences.

As the exciting Chrysalis saga continues, Bree's eyes are opening to unimagined possibilities. Reunited with her soul mate, Steven, and her protectors Bradley, Bill and Rick, she journey's through a world she is only now beginning to comprehend. Challenges abound as she contends with the jealousies of her new status from Madelyn and the two newest members of her clan. As tensions escalate, the dynamics within her new family are enough to rock her world. And if that wasn't enough to contend with, Esmeralda, her arch nemesis who desires nothing more than to wipe Bree from the face of the earth, holds nothing back as she strikes out at Bree's family and friends. As the prophecy told at her birth continues to unfold, Bree and those around her are only beginning to truly understand the danger's she will face and the strength required to endure. But her transformation as a Magical has only just begun and her abilities grow much too rapidly, draining her to the point of complete exhaustion. Her clan fears that too much has been demanded of her and they continue to tighten their circle of protection around her, preventing her from following her true path. Bree must find a way to convince them that she is capable of prevailing while she searches for a way to save both human and Magical worlds - before it's too late.

All the while as Bree is handling issues of jealousy, learning of her heritage, dealing with the men in her clan that are drawn to her, and learning of her path and what she must conquer to succeed and a highly over-protective clan that continues to stand in her way for her own good, it is impossible not to go on the ride with her as you feel her emotions as she endures each trial.
M.L. Lacy has indeed captured me in this story because I can hardly wait for the next chapter in this series!  Chrysalis: Awakening and Chrysalis: Tribulations are amazing pieces of work, as they wrap the reader in continuous nail-biting suspense, descriptive action sequences and soft intimate moments. I would greatly recommend this set to anyone that enjoys the paranormal and fantasy genre. I love how Lacy mixes the two and delivers such a wonderful tale that captures the heart and imagination.

Fledgling: Coiree Guardians: Book One

She didn't scream. She should have, but the scream never formed." Rebecka "Beka" Saberhagen idea of the world around her changed, when she found out her brother worked for a vampire. Just as she was able to understand that, multiple murders began to happen close to her home. Then she was attacked by another vampire. The night becomes a new playground for her and sometimes a nightmare. But, her brother and friends are being targeted; by someone with an old grudge. A grudge, she has nothing to do with. As she discovers the past, she realizes she will have to fight. Will Beka find the strength to fight for the people she loves? Is she powerful enough? Will she survive?

My Thoughts:

I may not have encountered all vampire stories that are out there, but many feature a love-struck woman that desires to become a vampire or one that is compelled into becoming one. For example, the Twilight series has the girl lead ready to give up her humanity throughout most of the series. It was refreshing to read Fledgling: Coiree Guardians as this did not feature what most of these tales do: A tall and thin woman that has her beauty increase as she gains immortality.

Beka is a character that some of the average folks can finally relate to as she is uncomfortable with her overall appearance, but also has a few personal issues with herself and her life. She is not looking for an escape from her life, but she seems to want to have that control back like any other person as she is on medications and her brother still seems to be raising her.

While some may find that there is not all the ‘filler’ description as Mari Miniatt jumps into her story and hooks the reader with a different tale, there is no lack of action, horror and gore described when events take place. There is still the vampire war of territory ownership, but also a hidden mystery that brings Beka and her new family together. While this book does not leave with the typical ‘cliff-hanger’ ending, it does have the promise of more to come.
